Completed Contemporary House Extension in Merton Park, SW19
Completed in June 2026, this project transforms a double-fronted 1930s semi-detached house in Merton Park, SW19 into a spacious five-bedroom family home.
The scheme combines a substantial ground-floor rear extension, a first-floor side infill extension above the garage and a full-width loft conversion, creating significantly more living space while retaining the character of the original house.
Externally, the contemporary design combines grey zinc cladding with warm cedar timber, giving the extension a distinctive but carefully balanced appearance. Large areas of glazing open the new kitchen and family living space to the garden, while the interior continues the same material palette with dark grey cabinetry and natural timber finishes.
The planning process was more complex than usual. Following three applications, QUBED Architecture secured two planning permissions from Merton Council and successfully won a planning appeal, allowing the final design to be delivered.
The completed project demonstrates how a carefully considered extension and loft conversion can substantially improve a 1930s family home, both in terms of space and its connection to the garden.
